Alternative Assessment

Online learning requires a different set of assessment tools. Traditionally students are assessed via their ability to retain knowledge, they may be asked to apply that knowledge to different problems, but they are measured in limited contexts, usually by tests, written assignment and project work.

What is it that we are trying to measure, memory, or are we trying to assess higher learning goals that involve deep understanding and active use of critical thinking skills? Should we be looking at new assessment approaches into learning environments such as cognitive assessment, performance assessment and portfolio assessment.
